In the paper we consider the notion of regional institutional studies («regional institutionalism») as a special dimension in social and economic research. This study area is touched in such disciplines as regional science and mesoeconomics. But not that intensive to be sure if this area is «terra incognita» or «terra fi cta» of institutional studies. We focus on studies of local economic systems to see infl uence of institutional (and, broadly, heterodox) thinking. We belief that «regional institutionalism» is rather «terra incognita» due to high complexity of its main object.
